- Hike for Life TX - my family needs your help!!

I have never done this, put a fund raiser on my blog.  This fund raiser is very near to our family's heart since we have a child whose birth mother said YES TO LIFE!

Texas' oldest Pro Life event, Hike for Life TX, is this Saturday.  This Pro-Life walk is a once-a-year event held around different locations in Texas.  All the proceeds go toward area Crisis Pregnancy Centers.

(Last year's Hike for Life t-shirt.)

Are you ready to do something that is counter active to the horrific atrocities of Planned Parenthood that have been documented through 10 (untouched and verified) videos?

This is your chance!

My family participates every single year in Hike for Life TX.  I just set our family fund raising page up yesterday and am so stinking excited that we are so close to our goal.

Click on THIS LINK and it will take you to the David Hughes Family fund raising page.

Thank you for helping us help mamas save their babies!  Most importantly, please pray!  Pray for an end to abortion!

iPhone photo dump

Hope everyone out there had a good weekend!  Boy! My family had a flurry of activity going and I tried to capture it on my phone.

Friday::

Miss Ester had her horse  trailered to a friend's ranch (who happens to have 2 horses of her own).  Miss Penny had so much fun with folks like her that she refused to get back in the trailer on Saturday to head back to her own pasture.

So..... Penny is still with those horses ;)

(No photos for that)

Friday::

Miss Sally went to the homeschool homecoming football game with friends.

Friday::

Miss Mabel had a friend come over for the evening, and they made more caramel apples.

Friday::

David and Stan the man headed out at noon on Friday for their Troops of St. George camp out.  David sent me a photo of the crystal-clear, spring-fed creek that ran behind their camp site.  (Yes, the boys went swimming in it.)  Stan also received his new rank, a Bull.

What is Troops of St. George?  It is a Catholic fraternity where fathers and sons learn to live saintly lives.  David and Stan belong to Troop #77.

Saturday::

The girls and I did a little bit of retail therapy and then went to 5pm Mass.

Sunday::

I was part of the planning committee for the parish fall festival this year.  (Most people have absolutely NO CLUE how many hours goes into something like this.)  I worked under and with an amazing group of adults!!

The girls and I were there at 8am for set up.  Mid-day, I took Miss Mabel and Clementine home (to get them out of the heat and Clementine, in for a nap).

Miss Sally, Ester and I were there working for 9 hours.

Bottom left photo ::  Our priests dressing up as the Mario Brothers.
Bottom right photo ::  My burn at the end of the day.

This week and coming weekend are going to be no different.  My motto is to "bend like the reeds" because it's all good, and this busy season will soon pass.

Coming down the pike this week ::
Tuesday - archery lessons (Stan)
Tuesday - riding lessons (Ester and Mabel)
Tuesday - Sally works (in less than four weeks she'll be driving herself!!)
Tuesday - Moms' Night Out (for me!)
Wednesday - weekday Mass
Wednesday - Confirmation class
Thursday - PT (Sally's knee)
Thursday - Sally works
Friday - Homecoming dance!! (Sally and Ester)
Saturday - Hike for Life TX (all proceeds go toward the crisis pregnancy centers in TX)
Sunday - Stan the man's 10th birthday!

Have a great week!

What's for Sunday dinner?

Carry out.

And I can hardly wait!

The first weekend of fall is going to be a good one for us.

David and little man just left for their first Troops of St. George camp out of the year.  They are heading up into OK to Chickasaw National Recreation Area taking advantage of the warm, southern weather...sliding down the rapids and swimming in the water holes!

Miss Ester is going to trailer her horse and head to a friend's ranch for the night.  They are going to go horse riding tomorrow together.

Miss Sally is heading out soon to the homecoming football game for our home school team.

Miss Mabel is having a friend come over for dinner and a movie.

The girls and I will head out to Mass tomorrow night.

Sunday is the big Family Fun Fall Festival at our parish, which I have to work at all day long.

The only thing I plan on baking is dessert on Sunday... Apple Oatmeal Crisp (recipe here).

Wishing you all a fantastic, first fall weekend of the year and a blessed Sunday!

September Days - Daybook Post

Outside my window ~

We had rain on Saturday!  It's been like some 50 days since we last had rain.  It was BEAUTIFUL!

I am thankful for ~

* the news that one of my sisters-in-law and a niece are coming to visit in October

* rain

* air condition (Humidity came on the tail feathers of that rain.)

* our parish family (This is so important since the next closest kin is in K.C.)

* homecoming dress and shoe shopping is complete

What I am reading ~

A Year with The Bible, by Patrick Madrid

I had been wanting to do some more Scripture reading, but needed some more of an explanation behind those words.  This has been a good fit so far.  Short and sweet each day.

From the school room ~

* We are now on week 7, and the year is moving along nicely!  I am very grateful for this.

* Religion ::  Living Liturgy for October

I am planning on celebrating the feast days of St. Gerard and St. John Paul II

Around the house ~

We completed four Parish Fall Festival games for next Sunday's festival.

Some of them painted pumpkins.

I got the front bushes trimmed right before it poured down rain on Saturday morning.

From the kitchen ~

A couple of the girls made candy apples over the weekend.  (yum! yum!)

I am praying for ~

* a friend's 7 year old son who is very ill

* for all those who have asked me to pray for them

* our priests

* my students in Confirmation class

* an end to abortion

I am listening to ~

* Stan the man play in his Lego table

* Miss Mabel and Clementine playing outside

Coming down the pike this week ~

*Tuesday - horse riding lessons for Mabel & Ester
*Tuesday - archery for Stan
*Tuesday - Miss Sally works
*Wednesday - Confirmation class
*Thursday - PT for Miss Sally
*Thursday - Miss Sally works
*Friday - homecoming football game (The Dallas area has a HUGE home school athletic association which includes a football team.)
*Sunday - Parish Fall Festival

One last photo ~

I found this beautiful orb-weaver spider in my bushes.  It was about 3" long and scurried away to safety when it felt the vibrations of my trimmers.

Have a great week ahead!

What's for Sunday dinner?

I'm SO ready to get back to our Sunday dinner routine!  Even though it is still pretty hot down in Texas, I'm planning on a yummy, fall dessert...

Pumpkin Squares (recipe here).

Do you know how weird it can feel to be baking "fall dishes" and still go swimming during the day?!

Just yesterday, while at the grocery store, I saw a women grocery shopping in her swim suit cover up.  (There was nothing wrong with the cover up itself.)  I thought how strange it was especially just coming back from the northern Illinois area and they have real autumn weather going on.

Sunday Din-din.

I plan on doing a Crock Pot Pork Chop dinner.  (Recipe here).

We need to trim the front bushes today and have to finish preparing the games for the parish fall festival next weekend.  (Long story...)  Crock pot dinners just are best when I am ready to unwind or have a busy day.  Agree?

I best get dressed and busy before the sun heats things up.

Wishing all a wonderful weekend and a blessed Sunday!!

Wedding Bells Daybook Post

Outside my window ~

We are back in Texas where the weather is still very warm.  I already miss the chilly night breezes of the Midwest gently blowing over my bed making me want to snuggle up under the quilt.

Speaking of that bed, below is a dresser in my childhood bedroom that now displays little, ornate picture frames of the grandchildren who have already received their First Holy Communions.

I am thankful for ~

* my parents and their openness to life!

Here is a picture of my mom, her 9 children, their spouses, and grandchildren...

46 in all!

As my friend Carol told me, my mom is a wealthy person.

* I am thankful for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and being witness to the sweet, young love of my niece, Megan, and her beloved spouse.

* I am thankful for hearing one of the BEST maid of honor speeches ever given (written and delivered by niece, Emily, Megan's sister).

Emily has a degree in English/writing and has great wit and humor ;)

* I am thankful for my mother-in-law.  After renting our vehicle at the airport, we drove up to visit her briefly last Thursday.  She lives about 90 miles north of my mother.

(Clare, my MIL, had six children and David is the baby.)

* I am thankful for having the chance to see another niece, Johanna, who lives with Grandma Clare to help her out.

* I am thankful to witness a dazzling rainbow on the drive from my MIL's house to my mother's house.  It reminded me of my father who passed away 9 years ago.

It literally was sparkling!

* I am thankful to have had a cup of morning coffee with my mom...each morning!

* I am thankful for my sisters.

My mom and dad had 4 daughters.  (Left to right) Jane is the 4th daughter, Mary is the 1st daughter, Sue is the 2nd daughter (as well as the mother of the bride), and I was the 3rd daughter.

That photo was snapped at the rehearsal dinner.

I love it!

What I am reading ~

My friend Carol also suggested the book Gifted Hands, The Ben Carson Story (Ben Carson is a GOP candidate running for presidency.)

I have not picked my candidate yet.

I must say, however, the character traits that this man holds are way above and beyond our current president!

From the school room ~

* I took one week off from schooling to accommodate our 4-day trip.

The BEST school decision was to make sure we had off the day AFTER we got back into town.  We had a very smooth re-entry because of that extra day.

I love love love being in control of our own school calendar!!!

* Living Liturgy::  In honor of the Feast of St. Adrian (Sept. 8), we watched the movie The Robe.

St. Adrian was a Roman soldier, a pagan, who was so moved by the faith of the Christians converted to Christianity himself.  For this, he died a terrible death.

Around the house and From the kitchen ~

Yesterday we celebrated Miss Mabel's 12th birthday.

Look at how much she resembles her Grammy in this photo!

Miss Mabel has had a rather drawn out birthday celebration this year ;)  A couple of weeks back, she had her big, horse themed birthday party with her friends.  Here.

* Our kids receive a big party every four years ending on their 16th.

While we were in Illinois, David's sister, brother-in-law, niece, and great-niece & nephew drove up the 60 miles from their homes to visit us at my mom's.  His niece, Grace, made these beautiful cupcakes to celebrate Mabel's birthday!

(Our niece Grace, great-niece Eva, and Miss Mabel.)

I am praying for ~

* an end to abortion

* that the Confirmation class will go well this year (it begins this evening)

* for all who have asked me to pray for them

I am listening to ~

Silence.

Miss Clementine is now in for a nap.

The kids are working at their school work and I've had the chance to work on this post off and on today.

Coming down the pike this week ~

Tuesday - Miss Sally works in the evening
Wednesday - Confirmation Classes begin -  I'm teaching 8th grade, second year prep.
Thursday - PT for Miss Sally's knee
Thursday - Miss Sally works in the evening
Saturday - Stan the man has a birthday party to attend

A final photo to share ~

Wishing you all a great week!

Final Prepping for the Wedding Trip

Working on the wedding trip wardrobe, one thing I have noticed is how different all my kids' tastes in fashion are.  From country to sporty and everything in between, my kids really do like to dress up.

Ester's Week :

She was easy!

Earlier in the summer she purchased herself a new dress (Wrangler from Cavendars.)

I purchased  this denim vest for her at Stein Mart on sale for $12!

Miss Ester finally accepted the fact that the old work boots were not dress-up appropriate.

After receiving a great coupon in my email, she bought (with her own money) a new pair of boots from Cavendars.

She is not into jewelry, so we don't have to worry about accessories, and since she has everything else she needs for the trip, she is done.

Check.

****************************

Sally's week :

Sally is wearing the dress and jewelry she wore to the homeschool homecoming last fall.

This time around she is replacing the sparkly shoes with her  boots.  Of course.

The only other thing she was in need of were some  new jeans.

Which she purchased for herself with some of her hard-earned cash.

Sarah is done.

Check.

*********************

Stan the man LOVES to wear ties!  (He always looks so dapper dressed up ;)

He ended up needing a new tie (Chaps) and white dress shirt (Chaps) from Kohl's for a total of $22 with coupons and sale price!

And since he already painfully tried it on once to see if it fits, we won't see him in it again until the day of the wedding.

The sport coat from 18 months ago...he outgrew.  So we ended up buying a new one, (Chaps) at Kohl's.  With sale and coupons, I spent $45, (still more than I had wanted to.)

(It's actually navy, not gray looking like it is in the picture.)

Pairing all of that with some khaki pants, he's going to look like a little stud muffin ;)

Stan is done.

Check.

******************************

My other stud muffin, David.

He was super easy since he didn't need anything new.

He'll be wearing this ensemble with his navy suit.

David is finished.

Check.

*****************************

Spreading out the needs of everyone before packing sure helped keep my sanity in check.

My niece's wedding gift should arrive in the mail today.  (Just remembered to purchase that a few days ago!)

The time to leave is fast approaching! We are all flying up to Chicago.  This is the first trip "back home" via airplane so it's like a mini vacation for us!  The kids are super excited for that.

Miss Clementine's backpack of goodies for the plane is ready to go.

The other four kids are in the process of getting their backpacks shored up, putting games and movies on their tablets.

I also booked one night at a water park...all the out of town cousins are staying there.  So much excitement!  It was too expensive to stay there the entire trip, so the other nights we will sleep at my mom's house.

My mom will have all nine children, their spouses, and all the grandchildren (47 of us)  visiting for the first time since my father passed away in 2006.

Grammy is SO EXCITED!  (And if you are from a BIG family, you know just how loud and now it is going to be!)

Good times indeed!

Please keep us in your prayers for a safe trip!

Saddle On Up and Ride On Over...

...for Miss Mabel's 12th birthday party!

All 12 riders enjoyed horsing around for one hour ;)

Then we moved onto some more birthday fun.

A basket of kettle corn with rolled paper cones and a basket full of hand sanitizers for each guest.

We served water and raspberry lemonade to quench their thirst before singing Happy Birthday.

We feasted on Black Bottom Cupcakes frosted with yummy vanilla frosting.

Little sister waited so patiently for her cupcake.

Of course I let her eat 2 ;)

Afterward Miss Mabel opened her birthday gifts.  Her friends are so thoughtful!

We love this girl so much!

Birthday blessings dear daughter!  The day was almost as sweet as you!

Love,
Mom and Dad
xoxo
