July 4th ideas

It must be the heat that's keeping us indoors which is giving me time to surf the web.

I've been perusing Pinterest a lot and found some more yummy and cute and simple ideas for this year's Fourth of July.

We are making these ~

... and these ~

(That's layers of pound cake, berries, and real whip cream, folks!!  And I LOVE how cute they look in the mason jars!)

... and these ~

(The link to the blogger who put these up are no longer available.  But pretty self-explanatory.)

... and these centerpieces (well, kind-of-like these) ~

... and these ~

So, it's probably been like 6 years since I've planned for this patriotic holiday a whole week ahead of time.

Can you tell I've been relaxing??

Just a reminder! For all you who use Google Reader...it is just about done.  From now on, you can follow my blog with www.bloglovin.com.  Just click on my button it will take you there.

Happy Friday!!

Adoption Gift

It arrived!

And I'm  SO  excited to give it to Stan the man!

I just need to shop for the perfect frame first :)

I posted awhile back that I found this on etsy.com here.

There are SO many creative people out there that rightly deserve recognition.  The shop,  My Sweet Swirls, is very professional.  The quality is amazing.  The shipping time - a little slow due to our USPS :)

On a posting frenzy today...I also put up a post about a new, baby girl born into this family's hearts!  If you have time, stop in and wish them congratulations on their pink bundle of joy.  I also put up a Square Foot Gardening update.  Check out what the girls found under a pile of leaves yesterday!

Happy Friday to you all!  May you have a blessed Sunday!

Square Foot Gardening Update - 3

My husband's hard work is paying off, and we are really enjoying fresh produce from our first-ever garden.

David first heard about Square Foot Gardening from a client.  (here's one blogger example).  After some research, he thought it was the best route for us to take.

The other day, two of our girls found this ~

(About 7" long.)

Our first cucumber!

We have also harvested sweet, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, lettuce, and tomatoes ... so far!

What our Square Foot Garden looks like now ~

We didn't think our cucumber plants survived the roller coaster temperatures, but obviously they did.

For fun, we planted corn (probably too late for Texas), but what's it going to hurt trying?

We have bean plants thriving...looking forward to harvesting those soon as well.

David just put up a bird net over the top to keep the very hungry Mocking birds out.  (Look closely and you'll see it.)   The birds have actually been our worst enemy.  They are feasting too much!!

A look back at our progress ~

Check out these luscious blueberries ~

A sweet neighbor lady hand-picked them yesterday over by Tyler, TX  (it was 102 degrees F - real temp).

She gave some to us because she knows we LOVE  LOVE  LOVE  fresh blueberries :)

I have THE MOST delicious blueberry pie recipe that I'm going to make today.

This is one of mine from last year ~

It is to DIE for, I tell ya'!

Recipe found here

Now, on to making that pie!

Oh!  One last thing...if you get a chance, stop over at Grace In My Heart to wish them baby congratulations on a daughter that was born in their hearts just yesterday!

Happy Friday!!

~  Patty  ~

Baby Congratulations!

Please stop over at Grace in my Heart to congratulate Mr. & Mrs. and the boys on the arrival of their beautiful, new baby girl and sister!

And say a prayer of thanksgiving for courageous birth mothers who choose life!!

What a happy day!!

Summer Camps

When I was a little myself, my summer days were filled with daily jaunts to the public pool.  We'd swim hard by day and slept hard by night.

We never had summer camps.  That was something we saw on T.V. or in the movies.  And to be honest, I thought "summer camps"  were for the rich & famous!  (I grew up in a little town along the Illinois River.)

Well, we've entered a new season of life that includes summer camps.  And it isn't because I'm rich or famous.  Ha ha!

Living in Metroplex has its good points, and some of those being abundant choices of activities for kids and parents.  (If your heart so desires.)

This summer, Ester and Mabel had their horse camp.  They truly enjoyed their love affair with horse camp!

Then there was SHINE Catholic Work Camp for Miss Sally.  Her camp was a life-changing experience (for the better!)

Now it's Stan the Man's turn!  Swim camp for two weeks!

He loves it...and that's BIG because not too long ago, he was petrified of the water.

I'm a BIG believer in swim lessons - but only when they are ready.  He's found his comfort zone, and his confidence has been growing.

His "coaches" are GREAT and work hard with each child.  The child isn't moved up until they test out.  Which is so important.  I've seen parents somewhat upset if their child isn't moved up.

In our house, being able to swim is a life skill that must be learned.   Just plain, old-fashioned swimming skills is what we encourage.

He swims hard in the morning and sleeps hard at night!

Hope you are enjoying your summer sun!

Patriotic Mason Jar Luminaries

Patriotic luminaries....pretty by day....candle holders by night!

Totally easy.

Totally entertaining.  A craft that all four older kids did together...and that is hard to find these days!

We bought the needed supplies at Michael's, including the flags ($0.50 a piece).

It's all pretty self-explanatory.

Once the tissue paper is cut into squares, we used the mod podge as an adhesive.  The kids each made two, creating their own design.

We ended up with...

A Texan flag, American flag, and one that had USA...

...stripes and checker boards...

...and more stripes and checker boards :)

I think they'd make cute table centerpieces as well, don't you?

We found the project on Pinterest, here.

She's back!!!

8:45pm Saturday night....safe and sound!  Thank you, Jesus!

Happy parents and campers reuniting :)

Happy priest to send the kids back to their parents (*wink*)

Miss Sally with our AMAZING associate pastor.  (We only have Fr. Arthur for two more weeks.  His new assignment?  Catholic student chaplain at SMU Dallas!! )

The camp theme was God, the Great and All Powerful!

Miss Sally with Miss Tele, (pronounced tellie),  not only Sally's small group leader, but the parish nurse on the trip!!  My girl was in great hands!!

This camp week was full TO THE BRIM with Texans!  So much so, they had their own week together in Memphis.  Hundreds of kids from three parishes::  St. Michael the Archangel (McKinney, TX), Our Lady of Angels (Allen, TX), and St. Martha's (Houston, TX).

More stories to come!!  Promise!!

So...What d'ya think?

New highlights.

Was going for a smidge sun-kissed lighter...and it came out...red.

This is a BIG change for me.  Totally out of my comfort zone.

(Seriously.  Self-portraits have to be one of the most awkward things!!)

Would you believe me if I told you my Miss Ester helped me???  She did the whole cap and hook process.  I think she did a pretty dang good job!

Hair cut.

Had that done about five weeks ago.  I kept the length and the hair dresser thinned the bulk out adding tons of choppy layers.  (I think she used a razor to it chop away.)

Every time I walk past a mirror, I'm not sure who I'm looking at.  It's going to take a little bit of getting use to I think.

You Are My Sunshine

I've never seen a field of sunflowers, have you?

It was HUGE crop, and this shot only shows about 1/3 of the field.

I think they were all camera shy...they were all turned away...and BTW, the sun was behind me/them.  I thought they turned toward the sun??

Sally update:

She phoned Tuesday evening at 10:15.

She  could not stop using the word "Awesome" :)

It did this mama's heart good to hear the happiness in her voice.  My residual anxiety oozed away and I slept great.  Thank you, Jesus!

Her job description:

She is assigned to a Catholic assisted living facility visiting with residents, prepare and serve them lunch, help cleans & paints whatever needs it.

She said the first day they spent 3 hours just visiting the elderly and it was "awesome" to hear all the "amazing" stories they had to tell.

Her daily schedule:

6:30-7:30am - Breakfast

8:00-9:00am - Mass   **I love that they are celebrating the Mass each day!!**

9:00am - 3:00pm - Work at sites

3:00pm-5:00pm - Free Time (showers)

5:00pm-6:00pm - Dinner

7:00pm-9:00pm - Evening Program

9:00pm-9:30pm - Prayer - they sing the Chaplet of Divine Mercy each evening.

9:30pm-10:00pm - Chapel (optional)

9:30-10:30pm - Free Time (showers)

11:00pm - Lights out

I'm so glad that she has had this amazing experience!!!

Our Coppertone Baby.

We purchased a water table for her.

She loves water!

She loves being outside!

She's inherited my tanning genes (thanks to my mother's Slovenian blood!).

Shades of Gray

One of those moments when the awe of  God's beauty is only truly captured with the human eye,  (no camera can do it justice, although I tried.)

That was early yesterday morning.

At 5:15 am, I hugged and kissed Miss Sally good bye.  David took her over to the church hall to catch the bus heading to Memphis for SHINE Catholic Work Camp this week.

This mama's heart was beating a little bit faster and feeling some signs of anxiety, but trying not to let it show.

A longer and tighter hug would convey all the "words" that were needed to say "I love you!" a billion times over.

Beside, how can you put into words what a mama's heart is feeling when you hug a child good bye for the milestone moments in one's life?

No phones.  No electronics at all allowed on the trip!  (They can use a chaperone's cell phone to call home if necessary.)

So I tucked a card-a-day into her suitcase...just to let her know she is loved and missed as well as some words of  encouragement.

Gosh!  The last time we were separated for any length of time was when our Miss Ester had her open heart surgery as an infant.    But Sally was too young to remember and I was too occupied with other important matters to really worry.

She gets back into town on Saturday afternoon.

If you could say a prayer for all the campers and those who have to travel greater distances on Saturday, that would be great!

**************************************

Moving on...or rewinding actually.

A couple of more Pinterest crafts that kids found for Father's Day.

Ester and Mabel, with the neighbor lady's guidance, made these ::

She found the idea here, on Pinterest.

Aluminum duct tape taped over foam sheets.  Take a pen to draw/write your design in.  Paint with black paint.  Wipe paint off before it dries.  Waa Laa!

Stan and I saw this on Pinterest ::

Since Dad has a boat, we thought this would be a cute and yummy boat to make him!  (Stan was SO excited to give it to him!!!)

You can find the idea here.

***************************

Best keep moving along...Miss Clementine is up, I can hear her on the monitor.

Hope you are all having a wonderful week!
