Ring-a-Ding Ding

Our new school year starts tomorrow!

Am I ready?

Well, I know the kids are ready (not all of them will admit it)  for routine once again.

Myself?  Gosh.  I feel as though I've been running a marathon all summer.  I wanted so badly to finish up on the mini house make over before school started up.  And I did.

Now I feel like a need a summer vacation - LOL!

Back to school traditions.

Cards.

I always put one on each child's nightstand for them to open in the morning on the first day of school.  They like this tradition :)

At this time of the year, I can only find them at Target.  Not much of a selection...mostly geared toward Pre-schoolers or Kindergarten.

Pep Talk.

I want to talk to each of them about what is expected of them this year.

Prayer.

I'm looking forward to saying a daily rosary with the kids again.  We break it up throughout the day...a couple of decades in the morning...a couple after lunch...and then the last one at bedtime.

Our homeschool group will have a back-to-school mass around Labor Day.

*******************************************

Our Last Hurrah!

Rodeo.

David took Stan the man and Ester to the Mesquite Pro Rodeo this past Friday.

They had SO much fun!  It had been on the summer bucket list.

Check out this cute video of the chuck wagon races....a rodeo version of NASCAR racing.

$12 tickets...$1 hot dog night...$1 popcorn night....$1 soda night.

Olympics.

These three hung out with me on Friday to watch the opening ceremonies of the Olympics.

Major League Baseball.

Rangers - White Sox Game.

I was able to purchase 3 tickets  (at the last minute)  to the ballgame Saturday night.

The air temp was 106 degrees F. at 6:00pm.   And the place was still packed!  We were up in the nose bleeds but, it was better than nothing.

We packed our own cooler filled with water bottles.  A must!

Sally said, "If the Rangers lose, they could at least lose with some dignity this time!"   Unlike the last game we attended.  Rangers lost 21-8.  Yikes!

Well, they lost.  This time the score was more respectable at 5-2.

We still had a great time.

Arts and Crafts.

Ester and Mabel's closet window needed a new curtain.

I created these out of white muslin, fabric glue, ribbon, and a spring tension rod....

For someone who doesn't know how to sew (except a hem), I was pretty happy with myself!

***************************************************

So there you have it.  Sorry that this was so long-winded.  I wasn't sure how much time I'd have to jump into the blogosphere over the next two weeks.

For all of you who are starting school this week, God bless you in this upcoming school year!  May you all learn and grow and remember that Jesus is our greatest example of who we should strive to be like.

I'm 6 months old today!

Hard to believe, isn't it?

Sometimes, I don't like to go to bed at night so, I hang out with my mom and dad on the couch.

I love my rice cereal but completely gag and spit out any fruits or vegetables.

My parents put me in my bumbo seat on the table at dinner time.  I love to watch everyone talk and eat!

I LOVE my mama and will reach out for her to hold me.   I turn my back on others when they try and take me away from her.

And when my mama can't  won't hold me, I try my pouty cry.  How can she resist this pouty cry?

Teething hurts!

My new giraffe teething toy....I highly recommend it!  Easy to grasp and soft to gnaw on.

My mom almost fainted at the $15 price tag!!!  (But she used a gift card on it.)

Don't even think about taking it away from me!

Four siblings were trying to make me smile for the camera this morning.  My mom was sweating pretty bad and I only toppled over once.  About 100 pix later, my mom saw 3 possible keepers.   I heard her say, "Thank goodness for digital!" Then my siblings announced that the outfit I had been wearing made me look like a boy.

What do you think?  Do I look like a boy?

My mom said we'll regroup and take another shot in a dress.

*Clementine is nothing short of utter joy!  The kids are still in awe of her as they were the very first time they laid eyes on her.  She is definitely our little angel!

The Last Painting Project

Of the summer.

Kangaroo Paw  (isn't that the cutest name!)  Olympic color #C32-2

The softest, creamiest pink I've ever laid eyes on.  I love how it turned out!

I matched it up to this print ::

I pulled out the pink in the Guardian Angel's gown.

Clementine will have many happy days and nights in her nursery :)

**The last four rooms I painted all needed two coats since the base color was either bold and bright or dark.  I purchased two gallons for each room and have about 1/2 gallon left for each of the colors.  Enough left over to use as touch up when needed.

Ladies' Man

So I had three of the kids at the pool this morning.   There was one other child there with her grandfather.  The girl looked about Stan's age.

Little man spent a good 20 minutes trying to impress the socks off of her with his best performance in jumps, splashes, and strokes.

It was the alligator stoke ( cue eyebrows wiggling) that finally caught her attention!  (Legs straight out, walking across pool step on hands, eyes above water line)

The sweet girl said, "I can do the alligator!"

Stan just beamed.

And they began to play together.

But his victory was short lived when the little girl's girlfriend showed up.  Stan was soon left in the dust.  LOL!

He then proceeded to shout out her name, pining for her attention, as he showed different "hanging on the bar" stunts.  LOL!

He definitely gets an A for effort!

Happy Monday!

Our Wedding Anniversary!

17 years yesterday, July 21.

I know it may sound so cliche, but I really am one, blessed woman (and he knows he is one, blessed man :)

The kids brought us breakfast in bed.  Too sweet!

Our day was kind of shot since Sally had a swim meet but it wasn't a complete waste.  There's always dessert, right? (I spun off my idea from Waltzing Matilda's idea.)

Isn't this the most gorgeous strawberry shortcake you've laid eyes on?!

Oh honey, let me tell you...it was as fabulous as it looked!  Three layers of sponge cake with real whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

And the color for July is red, along with ruby being the gemstone.  Which I do hope to receive... someday....(*grin*)

I purchased it at Central Market in Plano.  (If you like Whole Foods, you'd love Central Market!)

This afternoon we headed over to Grapevine, Texas to lunch at Esparza's.  Do you live in the DFW area? We HIGHLY recommend the place.  Great Mexican food!

David and I brought Clementine along.  She was an angel, completely and utterly entertained by "people watching."  (Ha!  Ha!  A girl after my own heart.)

Where neither of us are perfect and we both have our own quirks that can drive each other up a wall, I can look back and see how clearly God tips the scales in our favor, being filled with grace through His blessed sacrament.  And it is only by using that grace that keeps us moving forward.

More Painting Projects

I recently used the left over gallon of paint from Stan's bedroom to paint the girls' bathroom.

Before ::

(When Stan shared the bathroom with the older girls.)

After ::

I think it  turned out very pretty!

The color is from Lowe's :: Olympic Premium,  # C15-3 Pony Tail

Here is the close up of the shower curtain they picked out from Target ::

Isn't it sweet?

Next up...Clementine's nursery.

I know I had ambitious painting goals this summer, but after last year's miscarriage and then the limited-activity pregnancy, I feel like I am a bird out of a cage.  And have I enjoyed flapping my wings!

(Maybe that's why I like the the bird, shower curtain so much - Ha Ha!)

Gymnastics That Are A Win Win

Remember the story I posted about Gymnastics Gone Bad?  Recently, we found another club to join which has a home school class.  I can send both Mabel and Stan at the same time!

They LOVE it!

These pics paint a completely different story than the original nightmare, don't they?

And when the kids are trying their hardest and do something right...they get to ring the big bell :)

We are using ASI Gymnastics and are very happy with it!

They're Here!

Our school book order.

The kids -  (notice:: I'm not allowed to call them "the Littles" anymore) - love the smell of new books!  Who doesn't?

Two new things I purchased for the school year ::

Spanish curriculum

I was so excited to see how well-written and fun this book is!

This program, Learn Spanish with Grace! is for grades 3-8.  I purchased it through Seton.

The 3 CD's have a "teacher" helping with the subject matter with pronunciations, answers, and oral examples for each chapter.  (The girls can basically do this on their own!)

Apologia Science - Labs.

Totally new this year - Apologia Science has created home labs for their students!  I was able to purchase mine through Seton.

I loved it as soon as I saw it on Seton's website.  Every item needed for every experiment (except water) is prepackaged, labeled, and ready for use.  My time is  valuable and I'm over the moon giddy that I don't have to scrambled for science experiments anymore!

School officially starts in two weeks, July 30.  I may start earlier.  It depends on how this week goes and how much time I want off during December.

Hope you all have a great week!

It's Never Too Early...

to learn about patriotism...

(Clementine at 2 weeks old.)

This adorable baby hat was a gift from a dear friend who happens to belong to a very patriotic family with deep military roots.

She mentioned it could also be a Texas Rangers' hat.  (The Rangers have such patriotic colors!)

Have I mentioned that we are Rangers' fans?

Clementine takes her role quite seriously!

Just joking!

We do love how the Texas Rangers love our servicemen and women and honor them at every home game.

Her eyebrows always crack us up! :)

Pool Side

'Tweetums  (a.k.a. Bubbins  &  Princesa ) went into the pool for the first time on Sunday.

She LOVED it!    After Daddy finished with the picture taking (10 minutes) I had her turned so my body shaded her well-sunblock lotioned body.

I've waited till now since the southern, Texas sun is harsh and the heat is rough on babies.

Big brother thought it was pretty cool!

I think we have another swimmer in the makings.

Speaking of sun block...what do you use for your little ones as far as sunblock/lotions go?

Smorgasbord Sunday

I told my family that July will be our relaxed and laid back month.

Sure.

We definitely got off on the wrong foot.

* Two sick kids = two doctor appointments.  (Both on the mend.)  The doctor appointments can shoot a half day, can't they?

* School material ordered.  (For those of you who do not home school, ordering books can be a big job.)

* July 4.  The only relaxed day, spent over at Clementine's godfather's house with his beautiful family.

* Phone meeting with pastor.

I wanted to  review his approval to have sacraments taught at home.  (Sally is starting second year Confirmation preparation.)  Praise God for supportive priests!!!

* A belated Kindergarten "graduation" celebration over cookies, Kool-Aid and a gift of Legos.

* Clementine is quickly learning that table time is a social time.  She only had eyes for the cookies that everyone (but her) was eating.

* Gymnastics update!  I have found a new gymnastics club.  ASI Gymnastics that teaches a recreational, home school class once a week, and guess what?  Mabel AND Stan can take the class together!

* Van shopping.

My beloved Sienna has 71,000 miles.

We had our first major repair last year.  A silly (EPA required) charcoal canister decided to stop working.

$900 just for the part.  Yes, $900.  And this EPA required canister that went out did not compromise the safety or integrity of the vehicle.  The kicker?  It is only under warranty for 36,000 miles.

So the question is, how much money does one throw into a vehicle that already has high mileage?  Do you shop for a different vehicle or take a gamble?  We decided to shop.

BTW, Texas has some stiff emissions tests each year on each vehicle.  If you do not pass the test, you do not get your window sticker.  No window sticker = a citation.  (We would have failed the test if we had not replaced the part.)

(Taking a deep breath as I say type this...) I think this week will be more quiet...I hope :)

Have a peaceful & relaxed Sunday!

Red, White, & Blue Birthday Cake

Happy Birthday America!

I saw a picture of this on allrecipes.com and wanted to give it a try this year for our July 4 celebrations.  The whipped cream topping and fresh fruit made this a lite and refreshing dessert!

Ingredients

1 yellow cake mix
1 (8 ounce) container of frozen whipped cream  *I made home made whipped cream - see recipe below*
1 pint blueberries, rinsed and drained
2 pints fresh strawberries, rinsed and sliced

Directions

1.  Prepare cake according to package directions and bake in a 9x13 inch pan.  Cool completely.

2.  Frost cake with whipped cream topping.  Place blueberries in a square in the corner.  Arrange sliced strawberries as stripes to make and American flag.  Chill until serving.

Whipped Cream

Ingredients
1 cup heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp confectioners' sugar

Directions
1.  In a large bowl, whip cream on med-high until stiff peaks are just about to form.  Next, beat in vanilla and sugar on high until peaks form. Make sure not to over-beat, cream will then become lumpy and butter-like.

The cake was so easy to make.  Sally actually baked it the night before, David made the whipped cream topping, and I assembled it right before we had to go out the door to our July 4 celebrations.

*I made an extra batch of the whipped cream and piped it under each strawberry.

God bless America!
